One of the ancient professions that touch human lives, law shapes the legal perspective of Faculty of Law students through the basic rules and legal branches that were inherited from Roman law and through the new or developing fields.
Providing a legal education by adopting the principle of ‘Learning not for school but for life,’ BİLGİ Faculty of Law completes this principle with the motto of ‘be curious’, in which lies the meaning of human life. The new ideas that curiosity brings and the legal education that is shaped in accordance with these ideas enable the students to acquire the ability for critical thinking and questioning, for a multidisciplinary perspective, and for analytical thinking and interpreting. Our students have the chance to expand their horizons in different faculties of law by drawing on the rich opportunities presented by BİLGİ Faculty of Law within the scope of Erasmus exchange program. An educational program designed with this vision should be definitely matched with practice for the individuals who will be the jurists of the future and the pre-experience for legal practice should be supported with Legal Clinic trainings.
The works of Legal Clinic pioneered by BİLGİ Faculty of Law in Turkey provide the required support to students on this issue. By synthesizing the needs of civil society, private sector, and public sector with global developments and academic knowledge while addressing legal problems, BİLGİ Faculty of Law offers its students the chance to be involved in legislative drafting processes within the scope of relevant studies. The experience of being able to think and act like a legislator is among the unique experiences that BİLGİ Faculty of Law provides for its students.
Internet not only connects the global society but also creates common problems regarding each new development in the fields of information and technology, which require one to think in legal terms and resolve them accordingly. In this way, internet aligns the legal systems of different countries and their legislations. And this reality results in the fact that a jurist can practice his/her profession in any geography across the world. BİLGİ Law raises its students with the vision of being a jurist within different legal systems through its leading role such fields as Information and Technology Law, Competition Law, and Law of Intellectual Property.
This century that we used to call digital era just a few years ago is now characterized by artificial intelligence. It is of importance that jurists who are ready for the changes that artificial intelligence will create in the legal sector, just like in every other sector, such as the ones regarding scope and learning are raised. Especially considering that this change that accompanies artificial intelligence has directly affected our fundamental standards such as human rights, democracy, and rule of law, the education of jurists in the age of artificial intelligence has become crucial. In this regard, BİLGİ Law prepares its students for the future by providing them with current information with regard to technological developments, and discussions on political and legal arrangements pertaining to artificial intelligence.
BİLGİ Faculty of Law has determined its mission as being ‘a more innovative and enterprising law faculty.’ With the purpose of raising the enterprising and innovative jurists of the new world order shaped by the digital transformation, a law faculty in Turkey has opened laboratories for the first time. A total of four laboratories titled Design in Law, Technology in Law, Privacy and Innovation, Data-Based Economics, and New Means of Production prepare our students for the future.
As BİLGİ Faculty of Law, with regard to the issues of how a legal education could be improved, the expectations from this education, and the necessity of determining the roadmaps of the faculties that will provide this education through common sense and a pluralistic approach, we are ‘curious’ about the opinions and thoughts of students, public and private institutions, civil society, and other academic institutions while giving shape to our own roadmap and we give primacy to these opinions and thoughts. By sharing these valuable ideas that guide us through this link with you, we would like to present the pluralist message of Dean of BİLGİ Faculty of Law to your attention apart from her statements above.
