About the Department
The physiotherapy profession means becoming a specialist physician in all kinds of injuries, illnesses, and dysfunctions, leading to movement disorder and/or pain, using physiotherapy-specific evaluation methods, as well as gaining the knowledge and skills to plan and implement treatment approaches as developed by physiotherapists around the world. With over100 years of existence, and 50 years in the Republic of Turkey and the TRNC, physiotherapy is a profession taking on significant responsibilities. Today, physiotherapists are actively working to increase the numbers of independent individuals and health-related survivors and increasing the quality of life in all situations where movement and function are threatened by various causes. The current and future needs of societies, which are increasingly immobilized due to the developing technology in the world and our country, make the improvement of the physiotherapy profession inevitable.
Education Opportunities
In order to become a physiotherapist, it is necessary to enroll in faculties and vocational schools that provide training in physiotherapy and rehabilitation. The duration of the education given in such schools is four years, and the students can continue their academic education in masters and doctorate programs. The following topics are covered during the four-year-education: physiology, pathology, neurology, orthopedics, brain and neurosurgery, internal medicine, rheumatology, neuroanatomy, gynecology, and obstetrics as well as heat-light-hydrotherapy, kinesiology, normal motor development, manipulative therapy, electrotherapy, basic measurement, in addition to the field-specific theoretical and practical courses such as evaluation methods, treatment movements, neurophysiological approaches, pulmonary and cardiac rehabilitation, orthosis-prosthesis and rehabilitation, pediatric rehabilitation, and sports health and rehabilitation. Summer internships are offered in the 2nd and 3rd years of the education and practical exams are done in the 4th year, in a clinical study and final examination including the implementation and evaluation process at the end of the training. The course is taught with the expertise and professional experience of faculty members, to improve students' creative and analytical thinking skills.
Career Areas
Physiotherapists have a bright future in the world and in our country today. They are active in various units of public and private sector hospitals (neurology, orthopedics, and traumatology, rheumatology, sports injuries, cardio-pulmonary and chest diseases, intensive care, etc.), and since more academics are needed, they can work as research assistants, lecturers, and administrators in the physiotherapy and rehabilitation departments of universities.
They are also able to work as academics by pursuing a career specializing in science and a doctorate degree in specialized branches of the physiotherapy and rehabilitation field and can contribute to the development of blood-based practices by becoming associate professors and professors in the field of physiotherapy and rehabilitation science.
