The Department of Maritime Management aims to provide training on basic business administration and governance in maritime issues.
Job Opportunities
The graduates of this department can be recruited as central staff of maritime enterprises, port operators, maritime agencies, ship chandlers, maritime insurers, and marina administrators.

A program focusing on training qualified staff to carry out administrative, technical support and agency needs of merchant marine fleet is carried out by the Department. Students are equipped with skills and knowledge on maritime Law, Cruise Planning, Port and Terminal Services, Brokering and maritime Insurance issues.

NAV 101 NAVIGATION I – CREDITS 2,5 – ECTS 3
The aim of this course is to introduce to new learners the history of maritime navigation as well as the modern STCW and IMO rules and nautical instructions. For the description of a sea map first the earth, its shape and rotation, the difference of latitudes and longitudes will be explained.
SEA 101 SEAMANSHIP I – CREDITS 3 – ECTS 4
Seamanship gives knowledge and skills to new students about the STCW maritime rules definitions and concepts, history, parts of a boat and handling, maneuvering, boat operation and boating techniques.
Seamanship covers a wide range of topics, including types of boats and how they behave on the water, docking and line handling, rules of the road, how to respond to various emergencies, basic knots, machine room, deck structure and equipment, velocity distance measurement at sea, maritime ship business and other interesting topics
MMD 101 INTRODUCTION TO SHIPPING – CREDITS 3- ECTS 4
The aim of this course is to provide a comprehensive insight and understanding of the international shipping industry and the complex multidisciplinary nature of the maritime business. This course provides core concepts and tools relevant to specific subjects related to shipping and transport, and a detailed look at the role and functions of the shipping industry and the responsibilities of organizations, companies and agencies that support it.
MTH 171 MATHEMATICS FOR BUSINESS & ECONOMICS I – CREDITS 3- ECTS 5
The purpose of this introductory course is to explore and lay a foundation concerning Mathematical applications in Business, Economics and real life in general. It intends to enlighten and teach students some mathematical tools that are used in basic calculations business and economics, including simple interest, compound interest, annuities, etc. Linear and quadratic equations, are also considered as an application to calculate some aspects of demand and supply. Many other tools useful for applied calculations will be explored in the course.

This is a broad integrative course covering all functional areas of business, finance, human resources, management sciences, information systems and marketing. Relationships among business, government and society are also considered.
MRE 101 MARINE ENGINEERING I – CREDITS 2,5 – ECTS 3
This course provides knowledge about the STCW and IMO rules applied to steam engines and other properties of all kinds of machine used in business ship (steam, diesel, nuclear energy). Description about ship transport, refrigerating, oil and fuel systems, first start, power control in diesel motors, steam containers and power systems are defined.
MET 101 MARITIME METEOROLOGY I –CREDITS 4 –ECTS 5
In accordance with rules according to STCW. For safe navigation and transportation, air events correctly observe, international communications and meteorological weather forecast ability to provide the board.

NAV 102 NAVIGATION II – CREDITS 4 – ECTS 5
Students will learn how to use symbols and abbreviations, recognize notice for mariners chart and corrections, definitions of distance and direction, read nautical publications and specifications. In this course, sailors will also learn new developments in navigation.
EAS 102 PRINCIPLES OF ECONOMICS II – CREDITS 3- ECTS 6
The course Principle of Economics -Macroeconomic Theory and Applications aims to ground the student with the fundamentals of macroeconomics. The course aims at introducing students to the basic principles and analytical frameworks of macroeconomics. Emphasis will be on developing skills and analytical frameworks for understanding contemporary macroeconomic issues
MTH 172 MATHEMATICS FOR BUSINESS & ECONOMICS II- CREDITS 3- ECTS 5
The objective of the course is to enlighten and enhance students at an advanced level of what is learnt in MAT 171. Mathematical tools based on differential and integral calculus are used in calculations concerning changes in demand and supply, marginal cost, marginal revenue, marginal profit, elasticity of demand, etc. Another objective is to introduce the basis of matrix calculus and its application to solving systems of linear equations with a large number of variables in business and management.
PED 102 PHYSICAL EDUCATION – CREDITS 1- ECTS 2
Physical education needed on board of a ship and emergency cases are developed. These programmes are adopted to activities in a sea environment as a self-defence.

CMP 151 INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER – CREDITS 3 – ECTS 6
This course is designed to give students an understanding of how a computer Works, its capabilities, limitations and applications. This course is intended as a first computer course and it is not assumed that the student has background knowledge on the subject. The course will focus on theoretical issues during the first period, followed by application and hands on skills.

CMP 152 COMPUTING APPLICATION- CREDITS 3- ECTS 6
Introduction to Windows, Windows Commands, How the windows commands work, Introduction to Microsoft Office, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Power Point, Microsoft Excel and Project of Microsoft Power point. At the end of this course, students will be fully able to use Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Also, students will have to present a term project.
EAS 203 FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING I – CREDITS 3 – ECTS 6
The objectives of this course are to establish a sound foundation of the financial accounting principles and to ensure students understand the process of gathering, recording, classifying, summarizing, reporting as well as interpreting financial information. A first accounting course introduces the student only briefly to actual accounting concepts, practices and techniques. The real focus of this course is on the meaning and the usefulness of accounting information. After completing Acct 201 and Acct 202, students will be able to use accounting information for decision-making. Everyone needs a basic understanding of accounting information, not only those students planning a career in business. Accounting information is useful in any career as well as in personal financial activities.
MTH 281 STATISTICS I – CREDITS 3- ECTS 6
The objective of the course is to teach students elementary statistical analysis dealing with the representation of data obtained from observations or an experimental finding. This will be done by means of particular statistical tools such as the mean, variance, standard deviation, etc. Various ways of data pictorial representation will be effectively digested and shown to the students. Fundamentals of probability theory required for the further studies are also considered.
NRC201 SHIP CONSTRUCTION – CREDITS 3 – ECTS 4
This course gives students an understanding about ship construction and the essential stability rules. Afterwards they will be acquainted with ship construction and the stability reqirements with practical applications.

Effective management is fundamental for the successful operation of any type of enterprise. This course will present the principles, techniques and concepts required for sound managerial activity, emphasis being placed on planning, organising, leading and controlling.
IV. SEMESTER
MMD 202 SHIPHANDLING – CREDITS 2 – ECTS 4
The safe handling of ships depending on ship’s manoeuvring properties, human factor such as operator skill, experience and stress control in various environmental conditions is presented. From the results of CRG (collisions, rammings and groundings) analysis we know that one third of casualties are due to human error, where the same amount of CRG casualties is attributed to the poor controllability of ships. Training on ship handling is largely recommended by IMO as one of the most effective method for improving the safety at sea.
MMC 204 PORTS AND TERMINALS – CREDITS 2 –ECTS 5
This course provides core concepts and tools relevant to specific subjects in area of maritime transport and port management, in order understand the ship/port operations, the harbours’ activity and shipyard industry particularities, a detailed look at the role and functions of the seaports and the responsibilities of organizations, companies and agencies that support it.
MTH 282- STATISTICS II- CREDITS 3- ECTS 6
The objective of the course is to teach the students how to derive information about the properties of distribution(s) via analysis of sampled data. This deals with estimation of parameters, specifying a distribution, and finding the confidence interval for the mean or proportions which are one of the fundamental aspects of statistics. We will also treat Hypothesis testing for the case of different presumptions about distributions in management and economics.
EAS 204 FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING II – CREDITS 3- ECTS 6
This course helps students learn the basics of financial accounting by providing a solid presentation of the root of the principles course, the accounting cycle. It covers assets, liabilities, and items of income statement. Thus, current assets, fixed assets, short-term liabilities, and long-term liabilities. While covering assets and liabilities, income statement items are also discussed simultaneously. In this regard, accounting for cash, receivables, marketable securities, merchandise inventories, fixed assets, short-term liabilities, long-term liabilities and related income statement items are investigated.
MMD 211 MICROECONOMICS- CREDITS 3 – ECTS 5
The main objective of this course is to familiarise the students with the topics of microeconomics. The course will enable students to develop skills for rational decision making-ability to choose between various available options. Rationality in choice involves utility maximisation through either opting for least cost combinations or attaining highest (optimal) satisfaction derivable from consumption of goods and services. It is widely held view that resources are never sufficient to satisfy human want.This necessitate choice and doctrine of rationality guided economic agents in making the best choice. To achieve the objective of this course, emphasis will be placed on treating both graphical and mathematical notations of various microeconomics doctrine.
LAW 251 INTRODUCTIONS TO LAW AND MARITIME LAW – CREDITS 3,5 –ECTS 4
The purpose is to gain knowledge about laws concerning Shipping; to be able to foresee any legal problems and gain knowledge how to avoid or minimize them.
V. SEMESTER
CRG 301 CARGO HANDLING OPERATIONS – CREDITS 3 – ECTS 4
Establishments primarily engaged in activities directly related to marine cargo handling from the time cargo, for or from a vessel, arrives at shipside, dock, terminal, staging area, or in-transit area until cargo loading or unloading operations are completed. Included in this industry are establishments primarily engaged in the transfer of cargo between ships and barges, trucks, trains, pipelines, and wharfs. Cargo handling operations carried on by transportation companies and separately reported are classified in this course.
LAW 351 MARITIME LAW I – CREDITS 4- ECTS 4
The aim is to gain knowledge about laws concerning Shipping and to be able to foresee problems and gain knowledge in order to avoid or minimize them.
COM 301 MARINE COMMUNICATIONS – CREDITS 3- ECTS 4
This course forms part of the proposed Modular Framework for vocational and professional qualifications based on a degree program in Navigation Engineering. The Program gives students an in-depth expertise of managing a merchant vessel as a Deck Officer and ultimately as the captain of the vessel. The emphasis upon Classification, Instrument and procedures of Maritime Communications and use signaling methods to transmit and receive information.
In accordance with the International Procedures, concerning any merchant ships in port or navigation, under normal or emergency conditions.
EAS 303 MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING I- CREDITS 3- ECTS 6
The course is designed for non-accounting majors. It stresses the need for and the uses of relevant accounting information by management for the purposes of controlling the costs of operation, measuring performance, planning the basic direction of the enterprise and deciding among various alternative courses of action. The aim is to provide the students with a basic understanding of costs and to make them familiar with different classifications of the cost useful in managerial decisions.
MMD 304 MARINE INSURANCE- CREDITS 3- ECTS 4
Covers key aspects of hull and machinery, protection and indemnity, and charterer’s liability insurance. Students will review standard forms of marine insurance policies and related insurance documents. Seminar includes references to case studies that affected policy interpretation and marine insurance practice.
EAS 310 ORGANISATIONAL BEHAVIOUR- CREDITS 3- ECTS 6
In this course, the theoretical and research contribution of the behavioral sciences to management and administration are examined and applied to selected organizational situations. Areas to be considered from the standpoint of both individual and organizational performance are communication, motivation, conflict, decision-making, goal setting, leadership, organizational design, climate, development and control. Utilizing a systems perspective, the course attempts to develop in each student an ability to analyze and solve organisational problems.
SWM 201 SWIMMING- CREDITS 1 –ECTS 2
In case of danger such as fire or other disasters one must know how to leave the ship safely, and one also needs to know swimming. Therefore, in this course the principles of swimming is learnt in a pool as application.

EAS 304 MARKETING- CREDITS 3- ECTS 6
This introductory module aims to give students a basic understanding of what marketing is, how it can be used and how a marketing approach can be implemented and managed in a range of situations and organizations. It provides the foundation on which other advances modules in marketing are based.
EAS 301 FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT I – CREDITS 3 – ECTS 6
Primary objectives are to familiarize students with the major financial decisions made by firms, the process for making those decisions, and to provide a conceptual framework for understanding and analysing those decisions. Specifically, the topics included are financial statement analysis, the time value of money, bond and stock valuation and investment techniques.
EAS 306 MONEY & BANKING – CREDITS 3- ECTS 6
This course provides answers to financial questions by examining how financial markets and financial institutions work and explores the role of money in the economy.
MMD 308 OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT AND RESEARCH – CREDITS 3- ECTS 6
Operations Research is a new decision making field that has been characterized by the use of scientific knowledge through interdisciplinary team effort for the purpose of deciding upon the best utilization of limited (scarce) resources. In other words, Operations Research is a scientific approach to decision making that seeks to best design and operate a system, usually under conditions requiring the allocation of scarce resources.

The instructor will provide the students with assignments in order to assess their capacity to work collaboratively and involve in vast research works and this will be evaluated as Mid Term exam. The aim is to: gain skills and knowledge for chartering practice, to able the students to give the right decision at the right time during the chartering negotiations.
MMC 403 MARITIME ECONOMICS – CREDITS 3 – ECTS 6
The basic tool kid is a general introduction to economy and shipping, demand for shipping supply, competitive shipping markets and others, seaways, sea canals, ports, voyage estimating, international/trade and shipping, balance of payments, exchange rates and shipping are various subjects to be discussed
MMC 405 SHIPS OFFICE CORRESPONDENCE & COMMUNICATIONS –CREDITS 3 – ECTS 5
The communication carried out, both spoken and written shore to ship, ship to shore or ship to ship. The marine communication phrases known internationally standardized by IMO.
NAV 426 PASSAGE PLANNING – CREDITS 2,5 – ECTS 4Shipping cargo from one port to another involves several operations of both land and ship staff. One of the most integral parts of a shipping operation is the cargo or voyage planning. Passage planning includes complete description of the ship’s passage which is pre-prepared by an experienced deck officer of the ship. It should be done to ensure that the ship follows the required routes for reaching the port of destination.
SAF 213 SAFETY AT SEA – CREDITS 3- ECTS 5
To learn operation procedure of navigation equipment in accordance with the STCW regulation on board is the main purpose of this subject.

In this course, sailors will learn voyage planning by using relevant nautical publications and pilot charts according to distance, meteorological and oceanographic conditions.

EAS 408 INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS – CREDITS 3- ECTS 7
This course introduces microeconomic and macroeconomic issues relevant to the economic relations among countries. The first part of the course deals with the economic topics of international trade and covers issues such as countries trade relations and effects on their economies, and questioned the cost benefits of theses trade relations.
MMD 492 GRADUATION PROJECT – CREDITS 4 – ECTS 6
A well-defined up-to-date problem based on theoretical and technological investigations has to be presented as a graduation project by students who have completed all the compulsory courses and have reached at least an GCPA= 2.00. The project aims to finalize a research topic for the requirement of the B.Sc. Degree and assists the student to identify an original research design, conduct the related research activities and write the final project as a thesis with the appropriate ethical writing rules and references guided by the course advisor. The student participates in an oral presentation of the project and after approval submits a final edited written copy of the project to the Faculty of Maritime Management by the required date.
EAS 401 INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT- CREDITS 3- ECTS 6
This course is designed to examine the basic issues concerned with international trade characterized by rapid change in worldwide political, economic, technological, and cultural environments. The growth of international trade in goods and services, dominance of world economic activity by multinational companies.
PORT-MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP
Internship provides an application of the basic theoretical courses received in the first year. It is compulsory for graduation but does not have any credit on its own. The student will choose an internship placement in Maritime Management and have the approval by the Deans’s office before attending a period of 30 days in summer time. In the end a report by the student and the company is to be evaluated.
Internship Placement: organisational design, cargo handling and administration, human resources, foreign affairs, local and global communications, physical distribution, ship and maritime management documentation, chartering, port agencies, accountance, shipyard, maritime transport and marine insurances, marina, port, custom services and administration.
